But this has all changed, because we are actually getting flying taxis in Dubai in 2026.

So.. What Exactly Are Flying Taxis?
A flying taxi is an innovative electric vehicle designed for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), merging the capabilities of helicopters and drones to transport passengers above city landscapes. The concept of VTOL has its roots in the 15th century, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches of an “aerial screw,” which imagined the possibility of vertical flight long before the development of aviation.

What was previously labeled as impossible and crazy changed when companies such as Volocopter (founded in 2011) and EHang (founded in 2014) began developing early prototypes of flying taxis.
The concept of these vehicles dates back to the Aerocar – an early model constructed in 1949 which didn’t see its success. Another notable “failed” attempt was the Moller Skycar in the 1990s, but it was not successful as well because of issues related to safety, regulations, and cost – similar to other attempts in the past decades.

Dubai’s flying taxi project is announced to launch in 2026, aiming to transform urban travel.
These taxis will not only connect key locations like Dubai International Airport and the city center, but will also give people a quick approach to all the popular tourist spots. – they can go up to 300 km/h (186 mph), which shortens travel times significantly.
Think about it: instead of sitting in traffic jams listening to the same playlist twice you can call a flying taxi and be there in minutes.
The first rides are expected to cost between $100 and $200. Almost the same as today’s ride-sharing services, just a little more expensive. But if you can pay a little more to feel like you’re in a sci-fi movie, why not?
We think that as technology advances, the service will expand, so don’t worry- it’s possible that rates may drop later and that this will become a basic everyday activity for all of us.

Why Can Dubai Do It but Others Can’t?
In contrast to many other cities, Dubai enjoys a more flexible airspace environment that allows for smoother operations without the weight of excessive regulations. Plus, the Dubai government actively promotes innovative ideas, gladly embracing futuristic concepts while some other cities remain stuck in bureaucracy. Ring a bell, London?
The construction of necessary landing pads and routes for these taxis is made easier by their modern city layout. And let’s be real- Dubai has the cash to fund these big projects, something other places just can’t match.

Will Flying Taxis Transform City Travel?
